About Unison

Founded for the people therapy kept failing.

Unison was established in 2019 to serve communities that often go under-supported in mental health care. Members of LGBTQIA+, kink, and gender-nonconforming communities regularly meet judgement, minimisation, and naivety from health professionals — sometimes in ways that cause real harm.

After experiencing that gap first-hand, our founder Meg built a practice where nobody is judged or disregarded for who they are, how they live, or who they love. Since then Unison has grown into a full private practice running six days a week — online across Australia and in person at our office in Carlton.

Day to day, the practice is run by Marissa, our practice manager (with assistance from Meatball, our office mascot). Between them, every enquiry gets a personal response — usually within one business day.

No explaining yourself

Our therapists already work with LGBTQIA+, polyamorous, kink, and neurodivergent communities every day. You start from being understood.

Real credentials

Every clinician is registered with PACFA, ACA, AASW, AHPRA, or NMBA. Trauma-informed, evidence-based practice is the baseline, not a buzzword.

Access matters

Income-based sliding scale, NDIS and Open Arms pathways, telehealth across Australia, and a wheelchair-accessible office — uncommon for Melbourne practices.

Our Carlton rooms

In-person sessions are held by appointment at 3 York Place, Carlton, VIC 3053. Our rooms are wheelchair accessible — including the bathroom and entrance — which remains uncommon among Melbourne therapy practices. Door codes are sent with your appointment reminder.

Can't make it in person? Around two-thirds of our sessions happen online, anywhere in Australia.

Common questions

How do I get started?

Send a short enquiry through the website, or call or SMS 0480 706 922. Our practice manager replies within one business day with suggested therapists and available times. You can also book a free 15-minute fit call with a therapist before committing to a full session.

How much does therapy cost?

Counsellor and psychotherapist sessions use an income-based sliding scale: individual sessions range from $176 to $298, and relationship sessions from $215 to $440 depending on your income tier. Clinical psychologist sessions are $265 and mental health social worker sessions are $240, both with Medicare rebates available under a Mental Health Care Plan. NDIS clients are welcome.

Do you offer Medicare rebates?

Yes — with a valid referral and Mental Health Care Plan, Medicare rebates are available for sessions with our clinical psychologist (rebate $145.25) and our accredited mental health social worker (rebate $87.25). Counselling and psychotherapy sessions are private-fee with sliding scale pricing.

Can I do sessions online?

Yes. Most of our sessions are telehealth, available anywhere in Australia. In-person sessions run six days a week at our wheelchair-accessible office at 3 York Place, Carlton.
