How are sessions with a psychologist different from sessions with a counsellor or psychotherapist?
While all mental health professionals play a valuable role in supporting wellbeing, Clinical Psychologists have additional training and accreditation that allows them to provide certain services that are not available through all providers. These include:
- Mental health diagnoses (e.g., for anxiety, depression)
- Access to Medicare rebates with a valid GP referral
- Structured collaboration with GPs and specialists
- Advanced training in specific therapeutic models for complex presentations
Services offered by our Clinical Psychology Team
EMDR Therapy
EMDR is a powerful, evidence-based therapy for trauma and distress. While not exclusive to psychologists, our psychology team is trained and experienced in EMDR for clients who may benefit from a structured, non-verbal approach to healing.
Veteran & ADF Support
Our team has extensive experience working with veterans and active-duty personnel and their families. We partner directly with Open Arms and ADF-funded referral pathways—meaning no out-of-pocket costs for eligible clients.
Trauma & Complex Mental Health
We support individuals managing trauma, complex PTSD, and long-term mental health concerns. Our approach is trauma-informed, collaborative, and paced according to your needs.
Anxiety, Depression & Mood Disorders
We offer structured support for a wide range of presentations, including generalised anxiety, OCD, depression, and panic-related challenges.
Is working with a psychologist at Unison the right fit for you?
Working with our psychologists may be helpful if you:
- Are seeking support through a Mental Health Treatment Plan under Medicare
- Are interested in EMDR for trauma
- Are an eligible veteran or defence personnel looking for highly experienced, trauma-informed support with ADF approved practitioners
- Have tried other approaches and are seeking a more structured or diagnostic-informed pathway

Fees & Rebates
In general, individual sessions with a Clinical Psychologist at Unison Mental Health are billed at a flat rate of $265 per session.
If you have a valid Medicare Mental Health Care Plan from your GP, we will process your Medicare rebate for you at the time of payment. Medicare will then deposit the rebate amount of $145.25 back into the bank account you have on file with them, usually within one or two business days. This results in a total out-of-pocket cost (after rebate) of $119.75 per session on a MHCP.
We also work with a number of funded programs and external organisations. These include Open Arms, ADF, Bupa, WorkSafe and others. Where rates are set by these organisations, we will always honour their established fee structures and billing processes.
If you’re unsure whether your sessions may be covered by Medicare or a third-party provider, feel free to reach out - we’re happy to help clarify your options.
