Who We Support
Many people come to therapy because life has become harder than it needs to be. You might be feeling stuck, overwhelmed, disconnected from your partner, or exhausted from holding everything together.
At Unison, we work with adults and older teens experiencing:
- Anxiety, panic and chronic stress
- Low mood, depression and burnout
- Relationship and family difficulties
- Trauma, including childhood and relational trauma
- Grief, loss and major life transitions
You do not need to have everything “figured out” before you reach out. Part of our work is helping you make sense of what you are going through.
How we work together
Therapy is most helpful when it feels safe, collaborative and tailored to you. At your first appointment, your therapist will listen to what has brought you here, ask some gentle questions, and work with you to decide on next steps.
Depending on your needs, sessions may focus on:
- Understanding patterns in thoughts, emotions and behaviour
- Building practical tools for coping with distress
- Exploring how past experiences are impacting you now
- Strengthening relationships and communication
- Supporting you to make values‑aligned changes
Our team includes therapists with lived experience of neurodiversity, queer and gender‑diverse communities, kink and sex work, and non‑traditional relationship structures such as polyamory and consensual non‑monogamy, supporting an affirming, non‑judgemental environment.
Therapeutic Approaches
Across the team, we offer a wide range of modalities, including:
- Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) – to explore how thoughts, feelings, and behaviours interact, and to build more helpful patterns.
- Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) – to support values‑based living, psychological flexibility, and compassionate awareness of internal experiences.
- Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) – to build skills in emotion regulation, distress tolerance, mindfulness, and interpersonal effectiveness.
- Schema Therapy – to work with long‑standing patterns and beliefs formed in early life that may no longer be serving you.
- Psychodynamic and attachment‑based therapies – to understand how past relationships and experiences shape current feelings, reactions, and choices.
- Internal Family Systems (IFS) – to work with different “parts” of the self in a structured, compassionate way.
- EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) – to process trauma memories and reduce associated distress where clinically appropriate.
- Emotion-Focused Therapy (Individual) and Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) for relationships – to support couples, multi‑partner constellations, and other relationship systems in understanding patterns, reducing conflict, and strengthening connection.
- Narrative, person‑centred, Gestalt, and trauma‑focused therapies, as well as art therapy, mindfulness‑based approaches, and feminist and social‑justice‑informed frameworks.
Your clinician will discuss options with you and tailor the approach to your goals, preferences, and the pace that feels sustainable for you and, where relevant, your relationship system.

Medicare Rebates, Referrals, and Fees
Sessions with our clinical psychologists and accredited mental health social worker may be eligible for Medicare rebates when you have a valid referral and a current Mental Health Treatment Plan from a GP, psychiatrist, or paediatrician, in line with Medicare’s criteria at the time of your appointment.
Sessions with counsellors and psychotherapists in private practice are not currently eligible for Medicare rebates. At Unison, their fees are set with accessibility in mind using out income-based sliding scale, and some clients may be able to claim private health insurance rebates depending on their fund, level of cover, and the clinician they are working with; it is best to check this directly with your insurer.
When you contact us, our admin team can:
- Confirm which clinicians are eligible for Medicare rebates.
- Explain current fees and estimated out‑of‑pocket costs.
- Help you plan how to use a Mental Health Treatment Plan across clinicians where appropriate.
At Unison, we offer in-person sessions, as well as telehealth sessions via Zoom.
